NAVIGATING FEELINGS OF DISCOMFORT AS WHITE ALLIES

DATE: Saturday 17th June 2023 - 10am - 6 pm

PLACE: OYOUN space - Berlin

CO-FACILITATORS : Selma Sardouk & Tobi Ayé

The Eurocentric paradigm with all that it entails: individualism, capitalism, white supremacy, patriarchy, colonization... does not benefit anyone, not even white people. White allies are already aware or questioning the state of the world and their place in it therefore are joining the abolitionist and anti-racist cause. Nevertheless, the body of white allies still retains a lot of shame and guilt about their place in society, the privileges they hold, and the historical baggage they have inherited.

When we feel shame, we become numb and avoidant. We are not able to act properly, receive feedback or take responsibility for our impact. We focus on ourselves because we cannot get out of ourselves. - Often we either overcompensate and take all the blame on ourselves. As a result, we are not able to build authentic and trusting relationships with bodies of culture (Aka Bipoc) and engage fully in anti-racism work. But collective liberation can only happen if we can create secure and authentic bonds with others so we are able to work together.

How understanding shame and guilt will help you work around the discomfort and show up better in your ally ship?

How grieving your place and role in the society feels somatically for you?

What is the link between the perpetrator's trauma and your current health?

How can you contribute to moving from a Eurocentric paradigm to a more polycentric one?

This workshop is a soft container for moving from intellectualizing emotions to somatic exploration and confronting these discomforts as part of the collective liberation process and learning to navigate them in one's role as an ally.

FOR WHO

This workshop is for you if:
